The benefits of Kiln Dried Logs

Kiln dried logs undergo an intensive heating and drying out process where moisture is driven out of the logs to produce optimally primed firewood for your home heating and cooking needs. Our kiln dried logs are superior to seasoned logs for many reasons.

Better Efficiency

The drying process removes moisture content to below 20%, which means they ignite quickly and burn hotter than seasoned logs, resulting in a greater output of heat per log.

Less Smoke

The lower moisture content (<20%) means that these logs burn cleaner, produce less smoke and fewer emissions and contribute to better air quality. Our logs are carefully sourced from quality suppliers to ensure they're free of chemicals and pollutants.

Low Moisture Content

Our kiln dried logs are guaranteed to have moisture levels below 20%, which makes for optimal burning. So far in all of our independent tests, the moisture content of our logs have come in around 12-15%.

Consistent Log Sizes

Kiln dried logs must undergo uniform cutting as a prerequisit to kiln drying. You can be sure that all our logs will fit comfortably in your appliances, thus negating the worry of oversized logs.

100% Hardwood Varieties

Hardwood is far superior to softwood for domestic heating as the logs burn for longer, burn hotter and produce less mess at the end. Our hardwood logs are a combinaion of Ash, Oak, Birch, Beech and Alder.

Our kiln dried kindling wood, also known as starter wood or morning sticks, are optimally prepared to quick-start your home fires. Their low moisture content ensures each stick lights instantly and will create the best foundation to build up your fire with smokeless fuel or kiln dried logs. Our kindling sticks are 100% softwood which allows them to ignite quickly and burn fiercely, which creates the best environment for your other fuels to successfully catch alight.

Features of our kindling wood:

  • Kiln Dried for Low Moisture Content: A low moisture content allows for fast ignition and a hot, intense burn. This will maximise the chance of your secondary fuel igniting before the starter wood burns out.
  • Clean and Safe Burning: Our Ready to Burn certified kindling wood is free from chemicals and other contaminants ensuring a clean, efficient burn.
  • Softwood: Starter wood needs to light quickly and burn fiercely to ignite your secondary fuels. Softwood ignites faster than hardwood and so is the better choice for this job.

Kiln Dried Logs or Seasoned Logs?
What's the difference? Which is better?

🔥 Choosing the Right Firewood: Kiln Dried vs. Seasoned Logs

Whether you're lighting up a wood stove, open fire, garden fire pit, or pizza oven, the type of firewood you use makes a big difference. Not just for heat and cooking, but also for your health, your appliance, and the environment.

This guide explains the difference between kiln dried and seasoned logs, based on UK government and DEFRA guidance.

🌲 The Difference Between Kiln Drying and Naturally Seasoning?

Feature Kiln Dried Logs Seasoned Logs
Drying Method Artificially dried in a kiln Naturally air-dried over time
Drying Time A few days to weeks 12 to 24 months
Moisture Content Always below 20% Can be below 20% if properly dried
Burn Quality Burns hotter and cleaner Burns well if fully seasoned
Smoke & Emissions Very low Higher if not fully dry
Cost Usually more expensive Often cheaper if self-sourced

💨 Why Moisture Matters

Wood with high moisture content (above 20%) burns inefficiently. It produces:

  • More smoke and harmful particles (PM2.5)
  • Less heat
  • More gooey emission build-up coating the inside of chimneys (a fire hazard)

Both kiln dried and properly seasoned logs can meet the UK’s “Ready to Burn” standard, which ensures moisture content is 20% or less. However a batch of seasoned logs are likely to be more inconsistent with their moisture content and levels.

The “Ready to Burn” Certification

In England, it’s now a legal requirement that small volumes of firewood sold for domestic use must be certified as “Ready to Burn” by Woodsure.

This means:

  • Moisture content is tested and verified
  • Logs are safe and efficient for home use
  • You’re helping reduce air pollution

Look for the Ready to Burn logo when buying firewood.

🔍 How to Tell if Logs Are Dry Enough

Here are some simple checks:

  • Weight: Dry logs are noticeably lighter
  • Sound: Tap two logs together – dry wood makes a sharp “clack”
  • Cracks: Look for radial cracks at the ends
  • Moisture Meter: A small handheld tool that gives an accurate reading of the internal moisture content.

🏡 Best Uses

  • Kiln Dried Logs: Ideal for immediate use, especially in urban areas or smoke control zones. Perfect for use on open fires, wood burners, multi-fuel stoves, garden fire pits and pizza ovens.
  • Seasoned Logs: Sufficient if you have space and time to dry your own wood, which can take anything up to 2 years – just make sure it’s fully dry before burning. Seasoned logs can be used for open fires, wood burners, multi-fuel stoves and garden fire pits.

🌍 Environmental Impact

Burning wet wood releases more pollutants, contributing to poor air quality. DEFRA estimates that using dry wood can cut emissions by over 50% compared to wet wood.

Choosing the right firewood helps:

  • Improve air quality
  • Reduce health risks
  • Extend the life of your stove or chimney
